Singapore, 7 November 2024 – The Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) is pleased to announce that Neste, a leading producer of sustainable fuels, has joined as a member. Neste is one of a growing number of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) producers to become ATAG members, highlighting the importance of collaboration in ramping up SAF availability as the aviation sector scales up its energy transition.
ATAG unites airlines, airports, airframe and engine manufacturers, air navigation service providers and sustainable energy providers around a common mission to help drive aviation towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. ATAG and Neste announced their partnership today in Singapore at a briefing session with banks and finance institutions on the scale-up of SAF.
Speaking at the briefing, ATAG Executive Director, Haldane Dodd, stated: “SAF has become a cornerstone of aviation’s decarbonisation strategy, and its production has been driven by producers such as Neste whose efforts have helped kickstart the sector’s energy transition. By joining ATAG, Neste signals a strong commitment to the scale-up of SAF, which is critical for enabling our path to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.”
Alexander Kueper, Vice President Renewable Aviation Business at Neste commented: “Neste has been at the forefront of supporting the aviation industry’s drive towards net-zero carbon emissions with a SAF production capability reaching 1.5 million tons per annum this year and a further expansion ongoing. I’m excited that we are now joining ATAG which provides us an excellent opportunity to engage with our stakeholders across the aviation ecosystem as cooperation is crucial to ramping-up SAF usage and achieving the ambitious emission reduction targets set.”
Aviation is one of the few sectors in the world to have adopted an industry-wide net-zero goal, backed by the United Nations. There are several different pathways for decarbonisation, which all see the transition to SAF as a key element.
Dodd added: “Aviation’s decarbonisation represents an enormous challenge, relying heavily on SAF. The support of companies such as Neste is essential in helping the sector to work towards its intermediate goal for aviation fuel to be 5% less carbon intensive by 2030, and ultimately to net-zero by 2050. However, in order to achieve this, we do not just need the pioneering efforts of feedstock and fuel providers like Neste, but of governments and the finance community alike.”
