LONDON, 25 July 2024 – At a briefing to the finance sector on the need for significant investment in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), the Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) today welcomed SkyNRG as its newest member. SkyNRG is one of an increasing number of SAF providers to join the ATAG network, reinforcing the key role that SAF will play in air transport’s decarbonisation and the need for collaboration to accelerate the transition.
ATAG provides a unique platform for airlines, airports, airframe and engine manufacturers, air navigation service providers and SAF companies to share expertise and develop joint approaches. ATAG’s current mission and that of SkyNRG are perfectly aligned: to help drive the industry towards net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
ATAG’s Executive Director, Haldane Dodd, remarked: “Aviation has embarked on an ambitious pathway to phase out fossil fuel usage by 2050 and for its fuel to be 5% less carbon intensive by 2030. ATAG’s Waypoint 2050 work modelled that aviation will require between 330-445 million tonnes of SAF per year by 2050 in order to achieve this, contributing between 53 and 71% of the required emissions reductions. This cannot be managed by the sector in isolation – we need to work together with governments, investors and feedstock and fuel providers to ensure the necessary supply of SAF.
Companies such as SkyNRG, who are investing in a number of production facilities, are leading the way in SAF scale-up, while traditional energy companies lag behind. By briefing the finance sector during the Farnborough Air Show this year, we are working to bridge the finance gap and ensure the world’s banks and investment houses are ready for the challenge of helping aviation decarbonise.”
SkyNRG’s Chief Executive Officer, Philippe Lacamp, commented: “We are very excited to be joining ATAG and supporting the decarbonisation of the aviation industry. SkyNRG has been a leader in the development of the SAF industry for 15 years, from advising and creating demand to sourcing and selling SAF to airlines and corporate customers. We are focused on the need to build out infrastructure with a variety of feedstocks to enable the scale-up in supply of SAF and e-SAF. We have a pipeline of SAF production projects that include a facility in Delfzijl, the Netherlands, the US and an additional project in Europe.”
Aviation is one of the few sectors in the world to have adopted an industry-wide net-zero goal, also with UN backing. There are a number of different avenues for decarbonisation and roadmaps are in place to show how these can work, with all the various decarbonisation scenarios underlining the transition to SAF as key. SAF produces considerable reductions in CO2 over its lifecycle, compared to fossil-based jet fuel – an average of 70% to 80% today and the switch to SAF has the potential to create or sustain up to 14 million jobs.
SkyNRG has been a global leader in the SAF field since 2010, when they began working to source, blend and distribute SAF worldwide. It was the first company to supply SAF for use on a commercial flight in 2011 and it now has a network of 40+ airlines among its customers. In becoming a member of ATAG, SkyNRG confirms its commitment to continue supporting the aviation sector on its pathway to net zero.
Dodd added: “Net zero is a massive challenge for a hard-to-abate sector like aviation but with the support of SAF producers such as SkyNRG, it is one that the industry is confident it can achieve.”
