The question of carbon accounting has become increasingly important, particularly among investment and finance stakeholders looking for objective advice on how to evaluate companies’ climate performance. ATAG set up a climate finance metrics working group in 2023 for sustainability and finance experts from among its membership, to explore how the aviation industry could work together to ensure the best outcomes from various carbon accounting metrics being established (such as SBTi, ACAF, Impact, etc.) and present a united front on these important new areas for the financing of aviation’s continued development.
The working group’s focus was on the need for convergence of the many initiatives underway and the need to reflect the reality of the commercial aviation sector in the assessments and to ensure alignment with the industry voice.
In 2024 the group will continue its work on accounting and reporting of GHG emissions and help integrate and harmonise methodologies across aviation industry stakeholders. The group will also continue to review aviation emissions target setting approaches and initiatives and to ensure convergence and consistency with global industry aviation roadmaps. The group is being led by Philippe Bonnefoy from BlueSky.
