New energies

One of the key long-term energy requirements for air transport will be the need to access green (or pink) hydrogen and increasing quantities of renewable electricity. This is for either direct delivery of hydrogen for combustion in new generation aircraft, or as a feedstock for SAF production.

Making sure aviation is seen as a user of these clean resources and is built into strategic plans of energy suppliers and governments will be important. Although we will not need significant quantities in the coming years, we need to ensure that aviation is part of long-term planning and stake our claim as a user.

In 2025, ATAG will be exploring opportunities and events at which we can reinforce the message that aviation should be included in these strategic energy plans. An ATAG working group on the deployment of new energies will continue to work on SAF issues, as well as examining strategies and outreach on accessing the global supply of green hydrogen and renewable electricity.
