Waypoint 2050, 3rd edition, 2026

Launch of Waypoint 2050

Over the course of 2024 and 2025, ATAG collaborated with almost 150 industry experts from 45 companies to update the Waypoint 2050 analysis that was published in 2021. This identified various pathways for the decarbonisation of air transport and the progress towards net zero. The work with the industry experts was conducted through three ad hoc ATAG working groups on: aircraft technology; operations and infrastructure; and residual emissions mitigation.

The 3rd edition of the ATAG Waypoint 2050 report was launched publicly during a speech by Haldane at the Singapore Airshow in February 2026. It takes stock of the actions undertaken by the aviation industry so far and the challenges that remain. It reaffirms that net zero by 2050 is achievable but only if the current decarbonisation momentum is accelerated, particularly during the next five years, which is a critical period. A great deal of support will be needed, including joint action from the aviation industry, governments and the finance and energy sectors.

For more information about the findings of Waypoint 2050, please see:

ATAG held an information webinar around the time of the launch, to share the findings of the new report. The recording is provided below.

The Waypoint 2050 analysis and key messages were also presented at various industry events, such as a joint webinar with the Asia SAF Association (ASAFA). We plan to organise additional industry events on the subject of Waypoint 2050 throughout the year.

Communications activities

Various resources are available for industry communicators to use as part of a related media campaign. These are designed to support joint messaging around aviation’s decarbonisation and to highlight progress so far within the industry. The communications toolkit is available from the ATAG private website and includes:

  • template posts and graphics placards for use on social media
  • a messaging guidance presentation
  • headline messages to convey
  • PNG files of the graphs used in the report.

The communications campaign that is underway on social media will continue throughout 2026. The initial launch posts received more than 220,000 impressions and 14,000 clicks. Various blog posts have also been shared on social media. Please see:
