ATAG Statement on Pegasus Guidelines

GENEVA, 4 April 2024 – The Pegasus Guidelines have been developed by a working group of banks coordinated by the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI). They are designed to allow finance institutions to grade the climate impact of their aviation investments (particularly airlines and leasing companies), in order to start positioning their portfolios towards a 1.5°C-aligned future. As part of this process, they will seek information from airlines and lessors as to the efficiency of the operations of the aircraft fleet they are financing (the type of aircraft as well as their operational efficiency and use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to bring down the carbon intensity of their operations).

DUBAI

COP28 energy transition outcome welcomed by aviation sector

DUBAI, 13 December 2023 – The outcome of COP28 in Dubai has been welcomed by the Executive Director of the cross-industry Air Transport Action Group, Haldane Dodd, who said: “The call by countries meeting at the UN to ‘transition away’ from fossil fuels by 2050 is in line with our expectations of the aviation energy transition. Although the COP28 language could be stronger, it does send a clear signal that change is coming. At the ICAO Assembly last year and in discussions at the ICAO CAAF/3 meeting a few weeks ago in Dubai, this transition towards sustainable aviation fuels was shown to be a vital part of aviation’s own net zero pathways. The COP28 UAE Consensus outcome shows that all parts of the global economy must follow the same trajectory. Although aviation has more challenges for decarbonisation than many other sectors, we are an industry that is committed to meeting this goal and are already delivering what is needed so that governments can set the right policies for sustainable aviation fuel deployment. The finance sector and energy industry must also to join this collective effort.”

DUBAI

Agreement reached on aviation clean energy

DUBAI, 24 November 2023 – The aviation sector has adopted a collective goal to start the shift away from fossil fuels at the third Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels (CAAF/3), convened by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations specialised agency. Governments from over 100 States, meeting with industry and civil society, have set a goal that aviation fuel in 2030 should be 5% less carbon intensive than the fossil fuel which makes up nearly all of today’s aviation energy. This will be achieved through a transition to sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and, as an interim tool, the use of lower carbon aviation fuels (LCAF).
